Weekend Box Office Recap

"The Other Guys" beat "Inception" for the top spot in the box office race this weekend. The latest Mark/ Wahlberg/ Will Ferrell vehicle steered its way to a $35.6 million opening weekend, making almost double what "Inception" made and hitting just shy of a $10,000 per theater average. This is the second biggest opening for both actors, behind Talledega Nights and Planet of the Apes.

The other newcomer did better than I expected. "Step Up 3D" made a very respectable $15.5 million in its opening bow. I guess there is a market for cheesy dance films, especially when you add the 3D gimmick.

Biggest loser of the weekend goes to Universal's "Charlie St. Cloud" which fell 62% from its previous weekend numbers.

And falling out of the top ten altogether was "Grown Ups" "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

Here's the top ten for the weekend according to studio estimates released on Sunday:
1 (new) The Other Guys $35,600,000
2 (1) Inception $18,600,000
3 (new) Step Up 3D $15,532,000
4 (3) Salt $11,100,000
