Elfman Out for Green Hornet Score
Its the battle of the Batman composers.
Word on the street is that Danny Elfman (Batman, Batman Returns) is out as the composer for the score for "The Green Hornet", possibly to be replaced by "Dark Knight" composer James Newton Howard.
Interestingly, Howard is also working on the score for "Green Lantern" yet-another comic book adaptation.
The Playlist reports that Elfman has sited "scheduling conflicts" as the main reason. And he's probably not lying. He's scoring Gus Van Sant's "Restless" and Paul Hagis' "The Next Three Days" - both of which are scheduled to be released about a month apart. So its quite possible that Danny was spreading himself too thin and had to take a step back.
"The Green Hornet" has been plagued with setbacks. From re-writes, to switching directors (Michel Gondry replaces Stephen Chow) to a scheduled release date in January -which is usually reserved as the time of year when studios just want to get rid of a film they dont have any confidence in. Then the less-than-stellar reception to the latest teaser trailer at Comic-con, and now the news that Howard might replace Elfman on the score, it seems like just another drop in the bucket on a project that cant seem to find its legs.
Now, I have been a fan of Danny's work for a long time. I was a huge Boingo fan, from the days of the Mystic Knights, to the farewell tour and his motion picture scores have always had a certain level of whimsical and evil; dark and playful that attracted me to Elfman in the first place.
However, I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying that after listening to his body of work, its hard not to come to the opinion that they all sound the same.
All of them.
Here's a selection of Danny's work over the past 20 some-odd years. Listen to it and tell me what you think.
So let's hear it: do you think that Danny will be missed? Do you think this film has any chance of being a success?
