Yet Another Reboot: Burton Doing Sleeping Beauty?

I just have to laugh at the way all of us entertainment blogs report rumors sometimes.

In my news reader this morning was a post from Rodney at The Movie Blog, regurgitating what Alex at First Showing had forwarded, about a comment that Harry at Aint It Cool News posted, who heard it from some unnamed friend that Tim Burton's next film project may be a re-booting of Disney's classic Sleeping Beauty. They've even got the title already.

Here's Harry's original comment:

I was chatting to a fella I know tonight, and this person heard that Tim Burton is developing another classic Disney fairy tale in a quasi Live Actiony kinda way. It seems that Tim has a hankering for SLEEPING BEAUTY... but not really... You see, he's going to tell the story from Maleficent's point of view. In fact, it'll be called MALEFICENT.

Now, a lot of times these rumors are just suggestions planted by the studios to either steer fangeeks and cinematards away from the real information - or they are used as a way to gauge the popularity of a potential film before the studio invests any time and money into the project. Harry has a lot of connections - everyone likes to be his friend - so its basically a 50-50 chance that this is either actually going to happen or just a load of crap.

But if the rumor from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a fella is to be believed, it makes for an interesting possibility. Personally, it's a story I wouldnt mind seeing, actually. It'd be fun to explore the backstory of Maleficent. And with it being live action, it would definitely make for some awesome visuals. Can you imagine what that would look like? Especially coming from the twisted, curly-cue mind of Tim Burton?

As long as Maleficent isn't played by Helena Bonham Carter, I'm on board.

Opinions so far seem to vary from good to bad. My favorite quote from someone on Harry's board:

the worst of Disney cliche storytelling wrapped up in Hot Topic clothing.
Ouch.
