Weekend Box Office Recap

I'll bet that James Cameron is enjoying his Sunday afternoon right now. The former truck driver turned Hollywood golden boy watched his movie "Avatar" make another $36 million this weekend, surpassing 2008's "The Dark Knight" to become the second-highest grossing movie in North American box office history. The number one highest grossing film is Cameron's "Titanic." And it looks like its only a matter of time before Avatar surpasses that one as well.
Avatar has also broken the record for the biggest 6th weekend box office total in motion picture history.

And globally, the film will most likely clear $2 billion by next week.

The new films released this week could only try to keep up with the CGI juggernaut. "Legion" came in at number 2, making $18 mil, Dwayne Johnson continues to stink up the screen making kids movies, this time with "The Tooth Fairy" coming in 4th place at $14 million, and "Extrordinary Measures" came in below expectations to clear $7 million.

The biggest loser of the weekend falls to the one I predicted would fall out of the top ten by this time. Jackie Chan's "The Spy Next Door" dropped 51% from its previous week and just barely made enough to make it #10 on the list.

Here's the top ten according to studio estimates released on Sunday:

1 (1) Avatar $36,000,000 $552,797,418
2 (new) Legion $18,200,000
3 (2) The Book of Eli $17,000,000
4 (new) The Tooth Fairy $14,500,000
5 (3) The Lovely Bones $8,800,000
6 (5) Sherlock Holmes $7,115,000
7 (new) Extraordinary Measures $7,000,000
8 (4) Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel $6,500,000
9 (7) It's Complicated $6,189,690
10 (6) The Spy Next Door $4,750,000
