Weekend Box Office Recap

"Avatar" broke the record for the biggest box office opener in January, surpassing 2008's "Cloverfield," and while it's a little too early to tell for sure, it looks like James Cameron's sci-fi flick may surpass "Titanic" as the all-time highest grossing movie worldwide

The movie has made $1.022 billion worldwide ($352 million in the US, $670.2 million internationally) in just 17 days.

The next three movies pretty much stayed the same in the top ten, falling only slightly in their percentages. "Sherlock Holmes" dropped 41% but still made $38 million. Even the god-awful family flick "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" made an impressive $36 mil.

Here's the top ten for the weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday:

1(1) Avatar $68,300,000
2(2) Sherlock Holmes $38,385,000
