PGA Award Noms Announced

It's January, which means it's award season once again. That fantastic time of the year when every association, affiliation, and loosely-organized group of drunks get together to announce to the world who they think had the best film, was the best actor or just kissed enough ass this past year in Hollywood.

First up is the Producers Guild of America, who announced today their nominations for this year's Darrel F. Zanuck award for Producer of the Year.

Just so you know, Zanuck was a bit of a pioneer in Hollywood in his day. Uneducated and barely literate, he got his lucky break writing scripts for the Rin-Tin-Tin series of movies, churning out as many as 19 scripts a year for Warner Bros. and at the age of 23, they made him head of production. In the 30's Zanuck became VP of the newly merged 20th Century Fox company where he took pride in his talent for remaking movies in the editing room. Writers and Directors be damned, Zanuck knows best!

Zanuck is the prototypical big-wig Hollywood movie mogul: the kind of arrogant, opinionated, womanizing lech one has come to envision as a typical Hollywood producer. So it only makes sense that the Producer's Guild of America would idolize Zanuck and offer a trophy in his name. Sadly, the award usually goes for good producing and not how closely someone behaves like Zanuck. (that would definitely make for more entertaining awards shows!)

Last year the award went to producer Christian Colson for "Slumdog Millionaire." This year 10 nominees were announced (in keeping with the Academy Awards change to nominate 10 instead of the usual 5 films).

The nominees for this year's Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year award are:
