Farhan (Madhaven) and Hari (Sharman Joshi) meet Rancho (Aamir Khan) at an engineering school. Rancho is inspirational with his abnormal way of thinking and energetic way he viewed life. They all became fast friends and went through high and low times while at the school. But what they did not know was where he went after school and when they are called to be informed that he has been found they eagerly go to meet him while they remember all the great and not so great times they shared. 3 Idiots.

Acting wise Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Aamir Khan all did outstanding. Just like three friends in real life there is the popular guy, the creative guy and the smart-worry guy. Somehow those three tend to make great friends. They had great chemistry. They were perfection. Kareena Kapoor (who plays the love interest Pia) is vey beautiful but with that beauty comes great acting. She could have sharp wit, damaging sarcasm and then flip it to be compassionate and endearing. She was also perfect. Then there’s the ‘villain’ professor Viru (aka Virus) Sahastrabudhhe who is played by Boman Irani. He does such a great job because he’s so annoying and spiteful and plays it so well. He had to be angry, commanding, controlling and then eventually be caring and regretful. I know it’s redundant, but he was perfect too.

3 Idiots is a film I have seen on the top of the movie times’ list for a while. I read about it and it sounded interesting. I have seen that people really enjoyed it. I had not had time until this past weekend to see it and though it’s as long as Avatar and has way less CGI, it was 1 billion (not in profit, unfortunately that doesn’t dictate greatness) better in drama, comedy and actual overall story. I cannot explain how incredibly blown away I was by this epic movie. Towards the end the film actually melted and they had to take time to fix it. There were two kids that were sitting in front of me that were no older than 12 and 10. They came back (after, I assume, going to the restroom) to finish watching it. It seemingly held their attention for 3 hours. If that doesn’t speak highly for the film, I don’t know what will. There were no great action sequences or big explosions or anything like what Avatar has. It was talking and singing, simply put. I was in the theater with about 20 people and everyone stayed to finish watching it even though it took about 10 minutes for them to fix it and start it back up.

3 Idiots deals with pressure in school, suicide, friendship, parental wishes, identity, what one should do with their life, singing, dancing, laughing and crying…it’s an array of awesome. In my head I am thinking why can’t a foreign film be nominated for Best Picture for the Oscars? This movie showcases different emotions for each act that it’s uncanny.

Ever since “So You Think You Can Dance?” had introduced Bollywood dancing to their show I have been so enamored by it. It’s like techno music but with more feeling in the voices; more warmth. I got the soundtrack to 3 Idiots because I like the music as well as the singing in the film. It does become cheesy in a way but it’s a family kind of cheesy. When you feel sad and your family (or friends) try to make you smile they’ll do the oddest things that others would find stupid but you, deep down, find funny and it makes you feel better. That is what the singing and dancing is like. As weird and out of place as it seems to be in the film it fits and it makes one feel better.

3 Idiots makes a great point about grades and competition in school. It shouldn’t be about pressuring students to make great grades. It should be about encouraging the best of humanity out of them and see them expound on their already great love for why they are at school in the first place. Being a slave driver doesn’t reap rich rewards for anyone; especially not the slave. Torture might get some answers out of a prisoner but it doesn’t get nearly as much answers out of them as does being kind like a couple interrogators were to Germans during WWII. They got more information for being kind than they would have if they beat them senseless. The old saying is that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. More students will be eager to learn and therefore learn better and retain more information with kindness than with vindictive anger.

I would see 3 Idiots again. I would sit through the WHOLE thing, again. I would not sit through Avatar again. I couldn’t. It’s just convoluted CGI. It’s not unique enough to be so popular and yet that is exactly what popularity isn’t. Those that are popular are not unique. The same old same old in a prettier package that is (undoubtedly) visually unbelievable. In the same light 3 Idiots is emotionally provocative and holds far more fascination with human ideas than any made up blue alien could ever muster. Want to have a good time at the movies and forgotten what it’s like and don’t mind Bollywood films? This one is for you.
