Weekend Box Office Recap

Fallling slightly South of most predictions - due in part to a nasty Winter storm on the East coast - James Cameron's much ballyhoo'd and long awaited sci-fi flick "Avatar" still had a pretty stellar weekend, taking the record for "the biggest opening for a wholly original production." The film grossed $73 million, with Imax screens apparently sold out for the entire weekend. The concensus appears to be that Cameron's latest opus may not be the greatest story ever told, but its production redefines how digital cinema and imax projection can work. I don't know if the film is that groundbreaking, but from what I hear, expect as lot more studios to start taking advantage of the new technology.

The other new flick, Sony's "Did you Hear About the Morgans" staring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Horse Face, came in a distant 4th place behind Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" and Warner's "The Blind Side."

And the biggest loser for the weekend goes to "Invictus" falling almost 52% from its opening numbers last weekend to land in 6th place.

Here's the top ten according to studio estimates:

1 (new) Avatar $73,000,000
2 (1) The Princess and the Frog $12,224,000
3 (2) The Blind Side $10,030,000
4 (new) Did You Hear About the Morgans? $7,000,000
5 (4) The Twilight Saga: New Moon $4,370,000
6 (3) Invictus $4,170,000
7 (5) Disney's A Christmas Carol $3,419,000
8 (11) Up in the Air $3,100,000
9 (6) Brothers $2,630,000
10 (7) Old Dogs $2,289,000
