Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" was the big winner at the box office, bringing in $25 million in its first weekend in natiowide release. It's been in a limited run in LA and New York since November 27th.
Clint Eastwood's latest "Invictus" didn't score as well as expected, despite being the critical favorite (Rotten Tomatoes pegs it at 77%) - the Nelson Mandela pic which is already getting sizeable Oscar buzz, only managed to bring in $9 million, finishing behind Sandra Bullock's tear jerker "The Blind Side."
And the biggest loser of the weekend once again falls to "New Moon." Despite shirtless werewolf boy Taylor Lautner appearing on Saturday Night Live, the Twilight sequel dropped more than 48% from its previous weekend's numbers to fall to 4th place.
According to experts, 2009 is on track to be the first year in box office history to break $10 billion. I guess piracy hasnt really hurt the industry as much as they claim.
Here's the top ten for the weekend, according to studio estimates:
1 (16) The Princess and the Frog $25,000,000
