"Halo" movie OFF again?

Alright, seriously: this is getting ridiculous.

Four days ago, we posted the rumor that Steven Spielberg would be taking over as exec. producer on the much delayed big screen adaptation of the Microsoft video game.

Now it appears that despite website IESB's urgings that the rumor was a lock ("believe me this is solid " ) the reality is that its probably not true. Actually, the reality is that no one has a freaking clue what's really going on and all the entertainment blogs can do is guess, and then write about their guesses.

After the initial giddy gushes of glee from the geeks subsided, people started questioning the validity of IESB's claim. Could Spielberg REALLY be on the project? What would a Spielberg-produced film about a video game look like? Etc.

Gaming site Kotaku.com started asking around and got this rather boilerplate response back from Microsoft:

We're glad there's still a lot of enthusiasm in the entertainment industry surrounding the idea of a Halo movie. That said, the Halo feature film remains on hold as we focus on projects like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.

This sounds like a pad response from some minion in the Microsoft empire that probably has nothing to do with the film and is probably far from being "in the know" about the current status of the production. Considering that Kotaku is all about gaming, its possible they just asked someone in the gaming division what they know about the rumor.

However I am starting to believe that Halo is - and should be - a project that is dead and buried at this point. Halo's meteoric rise in popularity has faded away from people's minds as newer games get released into the market. The huge audience that would have waited in lines to see a movie like this are not there any more.

In the macrocosm of attention deficient consumer minds, does anyone give a rat's ass about a Halo movie any more?

Its time to call it a day, fellas. Its time to accept the fact that you've missed your chances to make this a blockbuster. Just close the books and toss this idea onto the "wouldn't it be cool" shelf in the studio vault.
