Hollywood News: Noisy Robots Win Wednesday
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" opened Wednesday to huge numbers.
The hype surrounding Michael Bay's rock-em, sock-em robot movie was enough to bring in an astonishing $60.6 Million on its opening mid-week day, making it the second-best day opening in movie history (last year's Dark Knight takes the prize at $67 million.)
However despite the hype and the huge number of people that went to see it on opening day, its not getting such great reviews.
"So what if he can’t put a coherent series of shots together?" said Ty Burr of the Boston Globe. "Bay’s going for pure sensation, and everyone knows dramatic continuity is for women and the weak.
The consensus among the critic appears to be that the robot battles in the movie are big and noisy, (as one would expect from Michael Bay) but that appears to be all the film has.
Stephanie Zacharek of Salon.com said, "Bay seems to think that just showing us a bunch of brightly clashing metallic limbs (accompanied by lots of noise) is enough to make us faint in our seats with excitement."
The film is currently hovering at around 22% at Rotton Tomatoes, so it will be interesting to see what will happen to the film for this weekend and more importantly what its staying power will be in the next few weeks. My guess is it should see about a 40% drop from opening numbers.
