Weekend Box Office Recap

Ron Howard's new prequel to "the DaVinci Code" took the number one spot away from Star Trek this weekend. "Angels and Demons" drums up a modest $48 million in its opening bow.

However, the film opened with about $30 million less than the first one did and generally fell below most critics expectations.

This time last year, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" underperformed in its opening bow, which ended up killing any future plans for further sequels. Its too early to tell right now, but unless word of mouth really drives people to see the film in its second frame, this may be the end of the line for our dear Harvard symbologist.

Meanwhile, nouveau Kirk and the gang's new mission to resurrect a dead and buried franchise performed admirably, slipping only 45% against the new opener. I nternationally, the reboot broke the $200 million mark this weekend.

Here's the top ten for the weekend.
