The first film in the resurrection of the Star Trek franchise hasn't even opened yet, but Paramount is wasting no time in green lighting its sequel.
Variety reports that Par is has writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof working on the script, and JJ Abrams is on board to produce (and probably also direct).
The writing team is aiming to have their script submitted to the studio by Christmas, shooting for a possibly Summer 2011 release.
Is Paramount THAT sure they have a hit movie on their hands? If the first flick flops, its a guess that the sequel will get canned, but I guess they need to strike while the iron is hot, just in case.
Call it the Twilight mentality: Rush the sequel out as fast as you can before audiences are distracted by something else and move on.
