Kowtowing to Nobodies

Personally, I consider the 90 some-odd individuals that make up the membership in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to be nothing but a bunch of elitist nobodies the film industry pays far too much attention to.

Somewhere down the line, Hollywood started believing the bullshit that the opinions of this tiny club of guys acts as a barometer for the Academy Awards.

But let's be honest here: it doesn't take a rocket scientist to be able to discern the difference between a good movie and a bad one. Just because this group of foreign film critics - who write for outlets no one has ever heard of - tend to agree with common public consensus on the entertainment value of a particular movie doesn't make them any more scientifically capable of a correct guess for an Oscar as you would be throwing a dart at a wall full of movie posters.

And still the media listens to these yahoos as if they have the Midas touch.

This year the little club of journalists decided that "Slumdog Millionaire" was the best film of the year, Mickey Rourke should get an award for best resurrection of a career and Heath Ledger posthumously wins for his role as a complete psychopath.

If you are interested in what these guys have to say, you can check out the complete list of nominees and winners at the HFPA website.

I don't care how well a dead person acts...they are dead. What are they going to do with an award? Recognizing them for their talent is one thing. Giving them a physical memento for their gifts to the movie world is like giving a dead person a house. It's stupid and pointless and it guilts people into picking them because they are dead.

Off of that list I wouldn't pick him. I would have picked Philip Seymour Hoffman. And Kate was not better than Streep nor was she better than Davis. She was REALLY good...but really good doesn't match what one needs to be to win an award and that's breathtakingly stunning and Doubt....deserves to be noticed by an award.

Bunch of snooty know nothings.

Yeah, but at least Ledger had a good excuse for not showing up...Hoffmann didn't.

Why show up if people are going to give the award to someone they never really too notice of before...it took him dying for them to go wow he can act.
