McConaughey is Captain America?

In addition to Marvel Entertainment announcing that a sequel to Iron Man is scheduled for a 2010 release, the press release also mentioned that Marvel was moving forward on bringing "Captain America" to the big screen the following year. And as soon as that news hit the net, speculation started bouncing around as to who would play the spandex-suited superhero.

Hoping to make a name for themselves in the rumor-mongering niche, Cinemablend says that according to their sources (which honestly could be anyone from an exec that refuses to be named or a guy who works as a part-time assistant to the guy that changes the staples in the copyroom) that Marvel's top choice is none other than Matthew McConaughey.

OK, as soon as the name is floated, people start considering it: McConaughey does have that all-American look, he's got a solid body, and can easily be seen doing an action movie like this.

However other questions start popping up. McConaughey's got a reputation as a slacker, pot-smoker and generally not that great of an actor. Can he pull off a character as heroic as Captain America?

Personally, I'm not sure.

But while the rumor floats around the internets for a day or so and the official sides start to deny that he is being considered, it does make for some interesting watercooler talk.

What do you think? Can McConaughey fill the spandex of this red, white, and blue propaganda comic book idol? Post your comments below.

We've already been in touch with McConaughey's agency and are awaiting a reply. If we hear anything other than further rumor-mongering, we'll post it here.

As always, stay tuned.

Hmm...how about Matt Damon?

I don't know. Matt Damon doesn't have the "look". I'd say his buddy Ban Affleck actually, even though I much prefer Matt's acting. He has that Capt. America facial look.

Calling Captain America propaganda shows you don't read comics as he often disagrees with America.

Ben was already Dare Devil. People will become confused. I say dye Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's hair blonde and have him do it.

Maybe Brad Pitt?

I think we need someone a little more rugged and heroic, more like Christopher Reeve (RIP).

I think about it, though, and I can't come up with anyone who fits.

Jake Gyllenhaal maybe?

I say Mark Wahlberg. He has the build, the acting prowess and the "look".

Captain America doesn't disagree with America, he disagrees with the government.

Matthew Fox from Lost. Dye him blonde. Think about it.

Captain America was all about propaganda: Lots of flag waving bullshit created by Marvel as a way to make the US feel good about itself during WWII.

Randy Couture would be the best Captain America

I don't believe "flag waving" during WWII was "bullshit" considering what we were up against. National morale was an important commodity. It was a much different situation from Vietnam or Iraq.

In any case, considering one of Cap's archenemies in the '70s was a thinly-veiled pastiche of Richard Nixon, I think he's moved well beyond propaganda.

he's got the phyique but he's no captain america. i say find an unkown actor. i don't want some established actors 'take' on cap.

Josh Lucas. He looks like McConaughey, but can actually act.

Plus, it would help make up for appearing in 'Hulk'.

I think McConaughey could be a great Cap. Look at his past roles. He's diverse enough to take it on. Example: Reign of Fire. Besides, this is exactly what they said about Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark and now I can't picture anyone else as the Invincible Iron Man.

I agree that McConaughey would do a good job...it's the same kind of "out side the box" casting that worked so well with Iron Man, and it would be intriguing enough for casual moviegoers to check out a take on a character that many don't know much about. But if they wanted a real attention-getter, they ought to go for Brad Pitt.

Brad Pitt is too old....

I say Duane Johnson, or Leanardo Dicaprio with a little working out...

Decaprio has the moves, and the look..

But Johnson has the jaw (under the mask) and the voice

Kevin McKidd..he looks like a good candidate
