In addition to Marvel Entertainment announcing that a sequel to Iron Man is scheduled for a 2010 release, the press release also mentioned that Marvel was moving forward on bringing "Captain America" to the big screen the following year. And as soon as that news hit the net, speculation started bouncing around as to who would play the spandex-suited superhero.
Hoping to make a name for themselves in the rumor-mongering niche, Cinemablend says that according to their sources (which honestly could be anyone from an exec that refuses to be named or a guy who works as a part-time assistant to the guy that changes the staples in the copyroom) that Marvel's top choice is none other than Matthew McConaughey.
OK, as soon as the name is floated, people start considering it: McConaughey does have that all-American look, he's got a solid body, and can easily be seen doing an action movie like this.
However other questions start popping up. McConaughey's got a reputation as a slacker, pot-smoker and generally not that great of an actor. Can he pull off a character as heroic as Captain America?
Personally, I'm not sure.
But while the rumor floats around the internets for a day or so and the official sides start to deny that he is being considered, it does make for some interesting watercooler talk.
What do you think? Can McConaughey fill the spandex of this red, white, and blue propaganda comic book idol? Post your comments below.
We've already been in touch with McConaughey's agency and are awaiting a reply. If we hear anything other than further rumor-mongering, we'll post it here.
As always, stay tuned.
