CNN (via AP) is reporting that Ringo Starr had been scheduled to appear on "Live With Regis and Kelly", to hock his new album "Liverpool 8." Ringo planned to perform the title track from the album on the show, however the show's musical director informed Starr that due to difficulties in trying to squeeze a talk show between the all-important commercial advertising breaks, Ringo's 4 minute song would have to be cut down to something under 2 and 1/2 minutes.
Ringo's publicist Elizabeth Freund said that the former Beatle tried to cut the song down, but could only sacrifice about 1 minute 15 seconds of his creativity to the corporate gods. The producers of the television show informed them that this was not good enough:
"We offered to cut back our chat time and asked them to fade or go to commercial. They were not willing to do that and Ringo was not willing to cut it further, so without a compromise we were not able to stay," Freund said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Ringo left saying, 'God bless and goodbye. We still love Regis.' "It just goes to show you that even if you are a member of the most famous musical band in the universe, you better make damn sure that any song you write is under 3 minutes or you will face getting the ax from Regis Philbin.
