Maury Povich: Ratings Whore

If you've never watched an episode of the nationally syndicated talk show "Maury," consider yourself blessed. Maury's website, (which hasn't been updated in a year) claims that the purpose of their show is to "explore the compelling issues that impact teens their parents and society as a whole." The show disguises itself as being this altruistic, thought-provoking dialog with people, but the reality is that Maury is nothing but a ratings whore.

The video clip below from Maury is a perfect example of the kind of thing that makes the show hugely popular with the daytime television crowd. It shows a chair swing ride at a fairground in some country where safety standards are nonexistent. The swing collapses and someone captures it all on camera. Its old footage and if you are a YouTube junkie, you've probably seen it before.

Sure the video is shocking. But what is worse is Maury's guest, who narrates what happens while the audience gasps in horror at the video. They even go out of their way to point out how one of the kids in the ride gets tossed into the air when the ride hits the ground. Then they highlight it with a red circle in case you didn't see it the first time. Then just in case you missed it the first two times, they show it to you again.

This is de riguer for Maury and what keeps him in ratings nirvana.

Another example of the kind of thing they do is what we call the "Troubled Teen" scenario: They have the mom of the kid on stage sobbing that she doesn't understand her little boy and how she just wants him to have a good life, etc. Then they toss the kid on stage, let him dress up in the most "gothed-out" club wear the kid has in his closet (which usually looks like a "Hot Topic" store blew up while he was trapped inside) and they make sure he is as foul-mouthed and as contradictory to what THEIR version of society should consider to be a "normal" individual. Then they throw the kid in boot camp where they videotape some camouflaged drill Sargent screaming in the kids face till he breaks down and cries.

After this, they parade the kid out on stage dressed in a polo shirt and chinos and right on cue, he exclaims that he loves his mommy. The crowd goes "Awwww" and Maury laughs all the way to the bank. I cant count the number of times I have seen this scenario played out.

The truth of the matter is that Maury Povich is a sensationalist bastard who's maybe one notch up from Jerry Springer on the evolutionary scale of humanity.

Why is this show still on the air? Because fat-ass slobs with no job really enjoy sitting on their worn-out sofas watching people more pathetic than themselves.

And that makes Maury rich.
