Weekend Box Office Recap

It was a battle of sequels this weekend with a big animated ogre that sounds like Mike Meyers beating up Tobey Maguire in tights.

"Shrek the Third" had the third biggest weekend in box office history, snatching up $122 million, and breaking a record for an animated movie, beating out 2004's "Shrek 2" at $108 mil. Check out J Jammer's review of the new Shrek here.

"Spiderman 3" slipped to second place, but continued to have a solid run, dropping 51% the previous week to rake in $28.5 mil for the weekend, with a total gross to date of $281,858,000.

Meanwhile "Georgia Rule" dropped faster than Lindsay Lohan with a toilet seat full of cocaine to 5th place, bringing in $3.4 mil. (I bet you knew I was going to go there.)

Here are the numbers, thanks as always to TheNumbers.com:

1. Shrek the Third - $122,000,000
2 . Spider-Man 3 - $28,500,000
3 . 28 Weeks Later - $5,150,000

Next week, "Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End" opens, which will no-doubt bump the ogre to second and the spider to third, as the '07 summer season trundles on.

Stay tuned.
