Smokin’ Aces is about a mob boss who puts out a hit on a magician who goes by the name of Aces. This hit is responded by several groups that include hitmen, former police officers and the F.B.I. They all know of his location and when they all arrive of course it’s an all out battle.
Sounds interesting doesn’t it? It sure should have been interesting but instead it failed. Let me start with what was good. There were good funny moments with great camera work that enhanced the movie and the action. The major problem was that there was not enough substance for the amount of drama they forced. There was enough story for action and blood shed but not enough for the overly dramatic scenes that made the movie look like it took itself too seriously.
The movie, over all, was decent and it was cool to see famous people through out the film. But I enjoy story lines and how things progressively move and make sense. This was a hack job that tried to pull the table cloth out from underneath the dinner set up without making a single plate move out of place. All it ended up doing was making everything fly in the air and shatter on the ground awesomely but it was ruined because a man cried over the loss of the plates.
Smokin’ Aces tried to have a twist ending but it tripped over its need to be over dramatic and instead what it ended up with is crap. It is similar to the feeling of stepping in dog poo and going, a few minutes later, “What is that smell?” It was a horrendous ending to what was suppose to be a good shoot ‘em up movie without the begging for tears for being serious.
I saw the preview to Smokin’ Aces and I expected a movie that was just solely going to be about shooting people and what happens when lots of people with guns go after one man. But it was more like OMG is my friend dead? Someone feel sorry for my loss here. The movie begged for pity and I just didn’t have any since I was ready for action, action and more action.
Now the action the movie did have was freakin’ awesome and if the entire movie played out in that manner it would have rocked hardcore. It had moments that were just flat out funny and had it stuck with this plan of being action filled with silly humor then the movie would have been much better than a B-. Instead the film was lost in a sea of confusion. It could not decide if it wanted to be serious with action or funny with action. Of course movies can have all three but the humor presented in this movie did not work with the drama and it just ended up making the entire movie ick. It was like the movie was an illegitimate child of Pulp Fiction and The Godfather. It is not a great combination even though they might be great movies.
I would never see Smokin’ Aces again. Maybe I might see it in parts because there are a few parts that were just funny crazy but as a whole the movie isn’t worth another viewing at all. It should have named itself Smelly Duce instead because that’s more fitting.
