Oh Christ, Here Comes the Religious Genre

Due to the box office success of films like "The Passion of the Christ," religious flicks (at least the Christian ones.) are starting to gain legs in the world of Hollywood, causing studios to speculate that Christian mythology will be the next big genre to milk a few million more dollars from the golden teat of consumers.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, MGM has secured the North American distribution rights to "Myriam, Mother of the Christ," the biblical story about Mary.

"We believe that a feature of this quality and pedigree will have an inherent appeal to many movie consumers in North America," MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands said. "The film has the potential to become a perennial favorite each holiday season."

No director has been attached to the flick yet, which - as one would expect - is scheduled to be released around Easter 2008.

The screenplay for Myriam is being written by Benedict Fitzgerald, who also wrote Passion.
