According to ScreenDaily.com (overpriced subscription required), Alan Rickman has signed on to play Judge Turpin in Tim Burton's upcoming film "Sweeney Todd."
Rickman joins Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and yes, even Sacha Baron Cohen in the cast of the flick based on the award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical thriller. The film is co produced by DreamWorks and Warner Bros. and distributed by Paramount. Production is scheduled to begin some time in early 07.
The story of Sweeney Todd is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who, using a straight razor as his weapon of choice, gruesomely sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him.
If your only knowledge about Sweeney Todd is from watching "Jersey Girl" you really owe it to yourself to find out more (and watch better movies). For way more information about Sweeney Todd than you probably want, check out the fansite.
We're not sure this film is going to help Burton's apparently unwanted reputation as a dark, morbid, goth idol, but it's sure to be a fun romp through a really creepy story. And besides, we haven't heard Danny Elfman's thematically redundant scores in about a month, so why not?
